Grounds

Year-round, professionally trained grounds technicians design and maintain Syracuse University’s 920 acres of rolling lawns, athletic fields, trees, shrubs, flowers, roads, and walkways. Great care is taken to ensure an enjoyable, safe and attractive campus environment.

In the spring and summer, lawns are mowed and trimmed, flowers are planted and watered, and shrubs and trees are pruned. In preparation for commencement each spring, more than 2,800 annual flowers are planted in flower beds and planters throughout the campus. In the fall, more than 400 chrysanthemum plants are placed on the grounds to enhance the beauty of the foliage.

During the winter months the grounds department operates plows, blowers, salt trucks, and shovels to ensure a clean and safe campus 24/7.  These efforts include maintenance of 3000 stairs, 21 miles of sidewalks, 680 entrances and stoops, 8,822 parking spaces (including parking garages) and 14 miles of roadway.
