Accounting for Gifts FAQs

What is a gift receipt?
A gift receipt is a donation from an individual, corporation, or foundation for which there is nothing received in return (quid pro quo). Such contributions may or may not carry specific restricted use of the funds.

What are restricted fund chartstrings?
Restricted chartstrings are gifts or endowed monies given to  Syracuse University for a specific school or college. The funds use is restricted for a specific purpose as set forth in documentation from the donor(s).

What are the restricted fund chartstrings and their use for my department?
For internal SU employees with access only, non-sponsored restricted chartstrings are located in PeopleSoft, MySlice, and FAB listings.

What is the difference between a fund 15 and a fund 16?
A chartstring beginning with a fund 15 represents a gift fund, set up to receive gifts from the donor(s) with restricted use of funds as determined by the donor(s) gift agreement. If no further gifts are received for this specific purpose, the balance will zero out after all funds are spent. A chartstring beginning with a fund 16 represents endowed monies given to the University with specific legal documentation stating the use of funds as determined by the donor(s). Only the interest earnings generated from the principal will be credited to this chartstring for spending. Interest earnings are credited according to the terms of the endowment agreement by the Treasurer’s office (to the specific chartstring).

What should I do with a check received that concerns a gift chartstring, fund 15?
Do not deposit this yourself through the cash operations office. All deposits for gifts must go through the Donor Relations department. Fill out a deposit form and put a description as to why and who the check is from. Send this along with all documentation received concerning the check and donor, to the Donor Relations department.

What should I do if I receive a gift check that concerns an endowed chartstring, fund 16?
Do not deposit this yourself through the cash operations office. All deposits for gifts must go through the Donor Relations department.
